On Tuesday I
finally got to go back to Cru (Campus Crusades), a campus ministry at UGA that
I am involved with. It was so great to be back with all my friends worshipping
my magnificent father! We are starting a new series called “Who is God?” and I
am really excited about it. This past week we talked about how God is our Maker
and our Husband. Alan, one of the leading staff members for Cru, gave a
wonderful talk on this topic and it really impacted me. I am going to use the verses he gave to us and try to explain this powerful topic the best I can. I hope you enjoy it!
God is our
Maker.
Isaiah 29:16
says “How
foolish can you be? He is the Potter, and he is certainly greater than you, the
clay!
Should the created thing say of the one who made it, “He didn’t make
me”?
Does a jar ever say, “The potter who made me is stupid”?
The God of the universe is the potter and He has all the rights. For
some reason we tend to have this mindset that we can control what happens in our live,
but it is all in His hands. He shapes us into who we are, just as a potter
shapes the clay into a beautiful creation.
Deuteronomy 32:6 says, “Is this the way
you repay the Lord, you foolish and senseless people? Isn’t he your Father who
created you? Has he not made you and established you?”
He created us, like actually made us who we are.
That is SO awesome. Yet, what do we do to repay that? We lie and we cheat and
we steal. What a great way to repay such a loving creator…NOT. Although we are
forgiven for our sins because our creator is more loving than we can ever
imagine, that does not mean we can just do whatever we want, completely
disregarding the word of the Lord.
God is our Husband
Isaiah 54:5 says, “For your Creator will be your
husband; the Lord of Heaven’s Armies is his name!
He is your Redeemer, the
Holy One of Israel, and the God of all the earth.”
Throughout the Bible, it is referenced that God
is our Husband and we are the bride. If you think about this, it is really and
truly an amazing thing. Think about the best marriage you can and times that by
a million. That is what kind of relationship with have with our Heavenly
Father. How GREAT is that?!
Isaiah 62:4-5 says, “Your children will commit
themselves to you, O Jerusalem, just as a young man commits himself to his
bride.
Then God will rejoice over you as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride.”
God will REJOICE over you as a groom rejoices
over his bride. If that doesn’t give you a picture of how mighty His love is, I
don’t know what will.
So here is the principle, in the words of Alan:
The incomprehensible, transcendent God of the
universe loves us so much that he offers himself to us in the most intimate
relationship possible, that of a spouse.
But what causes God to love us this way?
“The Lord did not set his heart on you and choose you because you were
more numerous than other nations, for you were the smallest of all nations! Rather, it was simply that the Lord loves
you, and he was keeping the oath he had sworn to your ancestors. That is
why the Lord rescued you with such a strong hand from your slavery and from the
oppressive hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.” – Deuteronomy 7:7-8
God loves us because he loves us. Now you may
think that that sounds silly, but it is true. God loves us because he loves us.
It’s that simple.
Now here comes my favorite part of this whole
talk: 1 Samuel 12:22. I have a new obsession with this verse, it think it is the
perfect picture of just how much the Lord loves us.
“For the sake of his great name the Lord will not reject his people,
because the Lord was pleased to make you his own.” – 1 Samuel 12:22
Because God doesn’t love us because we are good,
he does not unlove us because we are bad. To put that more simply: because God doesn’t
love us because of the good deeds we do, He is not disappointed or unloving when
we do not do good deeds.
I hope that this had the same impact on you as it
did on me. It was such a wonderful reminder of just how much our wonderful God
loves us. Although it is more than we can ever even imagine, this definitely
gives a small glimpse at just how much He loves us.
God Bless!
