“Please Hear
What I’m Not Saying” by Charles C. Finn talks about the masks that
people put on to hide themselves from the world. Finn says, “Don’t be fooled by me. Don’t be fooled by
the face I wear. For I wear a mask, a thousand masks, masks that I’m afraid to
take off, and none of them is me.”
The poem then goes into great detail about the masks that this
person wears and how they can’t seem to take them off. The person pleads with
the reader to help them take off the masks and the poem ends with, “Who am I, you may wonder? I am someone you
know very well. For I am every man you meet and I am every woman you meet.
Although you may not always like to
admit it, we all hide behind some sort of mask. Whether it is hiding behind
your emotions or hiding behind your material possessions, these masks give us a false sense of comfort that can only really be
obtained through God. These masks prevent us from reaching our full
potential. At Happening, we are taught to let down our guard and let God’s love completely and totally fill our
hearts. In order to fully let down our guards, we first have to remove the
masks that shield the world from seeing the real us, the us that God beautifully made.
